Before Your Lesson

What to wear

The right clothes keep a rider safe and comfortable. Here is everything you need to come prepared for a lesson at River Road.

The essentials

These three things matter most. Riders cannot ride safely without them.

Long pants

Riding tights, breeches, leggings, or jeans. Long pants protect the rider's legs against the saddle. No shorts.

Closed-toe shoes with a heel

A sturdy closed-toe shoe or boot with a small (about half-inch) heel. The heel keeps the foot from sliding through the stirrup. No sandals or flat-soled shoes.

A riding helmet

An ASTM/SEI-certified equestrian helmet is required for every rider. Let us know if you need to borrow one — loaner helmets are available.

Comfort & weather

  • Dress for the weather — the barn and arena are outdoors. Layers work well in spring and fall.
  • Bring sun protection in summer: a light long-sleeve layer and sunscreen.
  • Tie back long hair and skip dangling jewelry or scarves.
  • Fitted clothing is safer and more comfortable than loose or baggy layers.
  • Gloves are optional but many riders like them, especially in cold weather.
